Railway Workers Union Announces Nationwide Strike for September 30

Accra, Ghana — The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has declared plans to embark on a nationwide strike on September 30, 2025, over unresolved grievances relating to unpaid salary arrears and deteriorating working conditions.

According to union leaders, members have faced “severe financial hardships” due to months of unpaid wages, which they argue have left workers unable to provide for their families. The strike is expected to affect both passenger train services and freight operations, disrupting transportation networks and trade activities.

Union executives say repeated attempts to engage government and management officials have not yielded results, leaving workers with no option but to withdraw their services.

The planned strike comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to revitalize its railway system to ease road congestion and support industrial growth. Analysts warn that the industrial action could cause significant setbacks to these plans while worsening economic pressures for industries dependent on rail transport.
