About Agriterra
Agriterra is an international non-profit organization founded by the Dutch agricultural sector. We are dedicated to strengthening farmer organizations, because we believe they are the cornerstone of thriving rural communities. By building on the success of the Dutch cooperative sector, we provide the knowledge, resources, and support farmer organizations need to grow stronger, thrive economically, and create lasting local prosperity. With a strong presence in the countries where we work, Agriterra fosters collaboration and long-term impact. Together, we sow the seeds of change today, for a thriving tomorrow.
Background of the Project
The “Pepper Plus Ghana” initiative aims to strengthen the horticulture sector in Ghana’s Volta and Ashanti regions by addressing key challenges faced by smallholder farmers, such as weak farmer organizations, limited market access, and low adoption of modern technologies. Led by Agriterra in partnership with Holand Greentech, Akofresh, and Ghana Green Label, the project focuses on professionalizing five Farmer Organizations, training lead farmers to reach at least 2,000 members, promoting climate-smart practices, and improving storage and market linkages. The overall goal of the project is to increase the income of the pepper farmers by 40% at the end of the project in 2028. It targets the cultivation of market-driven varieties of peppers for local and export markets, engages processors like Yaka and input suppliers, and promotes youth and female participation. The initiative, aligned with the Netherlands Embassy’s CombiTrack framework, aims to enhance market access, job creation, and the sustainability of Ghana’s horticulture sector. This project aims to professionally organize and train 2,000 farmers in advanced horticultural practices, while facilitating access to cold storage, certification, and premium markets. By June 2028, farmers who adopt these interventions are projected to increase their income
from habanero and chili cultivation by 40%.
